There was a super interesting study covered last month regarding prebiotics and the brain reward system. They conducted MRI scans of overweight adults after one group took prebiotic supplements and the other took a placebo. The scans were looking for activation of the reward system in relation to different foods. The group taking prebiotic supplements were more likely to make healthier food choices as there was less reward experienced when viewing higher calorie foods. Interesting eh?

For the purposes of the research, a supplement was used. But the good news is that prebiotics are found in everyday food containing specific plant fibres and carbohydrates. Fruit and veggies are a good place to start. There’s more to it than that, but what we’re saying is that you don’t need a supplement to up your prebiotic intake. You just need to become more aware of the foods you eat and eat more prebiotic containing foods!

“Science has shown that a healthy gut can make beneficial changes in the brain and vice versa, via a connection known as the gut-brain axis. A healthy gut requires good amounts of probiotics (beneficial bacteria), which grow by feeding off prebiotics, compounds found in plant fiber. A new study suggests prebiotics have a role in the gut-brain axis beyond being a food source and eating them might help people choose healthier foods.”

If you experience digestive issues or other health conditions then it’s always advised to consult a medical professional before making changes to your diet.
